Leveraging on NLP to gain insights in Social Media, News & Broadcasting by George Regkas

Semantic analysis allows organizations to interpret the meaning of the text and extract critical information from unstructured data. Semantic-enhanced machine learning tools are vital natural language processing components that boost decision-making and improve the overall customer experience. Semantic analysis refers to a process of understanding natural language (text) by extracting insightful information such as context, emotions, and sentiments from unstructured data. It gives computers and systems the ability to understand, interpret, and derive meanings from sentences, paragraphs, reports, registers, files, or any document of a similar kind. Keras, a Python-based deep learning library, was developed to enable fast experimentation and ease of use for building and training deep neural networks. It works as an interface for the machine learning platforms TensorFlow and Theano.

Some of the library’s other top use cases include finding text similarity and converting words and documents to vectors. Topping our list is Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK), which is widely considered the best Python library for NLP. NLTK is an essential library that supports tasks like classification, tagging, stemming, parsing, and semantic reasoning. It is often chosen by beginners looking to get involved in the fields of NLP and machine learning.

NLTK also provides access to more than 50 corpora (large collections of text) and lexicons for use in natural language processing projects. Hugging Face is known for its user-friendliness, allowing both beginners and advanced users to use powerful AI models without having to deep-dive into the weeds of machine learning. Its extensive model hub provides access to thousands of community-contributed models, including those fine-tuned for specific use cases like sentiment analysis and question answering. Hugging Face also supports integration with the popular TensorFlow and PyTorch frameworks, bringing even more flexibility to building and deploying custom models. Hugging Face Transformers has established itself as a key player in the natural language processing field, offering an extensive library of pre-trained models that cater to a range of tasks, from text generation to question-answering.

Specifically, Google recently introduced Bidirectional Encoded Representations of Transformers (BERT), a transformer architecture that serves as an English language model trained on a corpus of over 800 million words in the general domain13. BERT encodes bidirectional representations of text using self-supervision, allowing for rich embeddings that capture meaning in human language (i.e., syntax and semantics). A classification (CLS) feature vector is an output from the last layer of the BERT model representing the embedding that captures syntactic and semantic information from the input text, which can be used to train additional ML models such as a classifier13. Importantly, BERT can be easily adapted to new domains by transfer learning with minimal fine-tuning, providing an ideal language model for specialized domains such as medicine13,17,18. In addition to predicting the onset of psychosis, the methods provide insight into the thought processes affected in the emergence of psychosis. Our results from randomly shuffling words showed that semantic density was a function of the way words were organized into sentences, not simply which words were used across sentences.

Network settings

A document can not be processed in its raw format, and hence it has to be transformed into a machine-understandable representation27. Selecting the convenient representation scheme suits the application is a substantial step28. The fundamental methodologies used to represent text data as vectors are Vector Space Model (VSM) and neural network-based representation. Text components are represented by numerical vectors which may represent a character, word, paragraph, or the whole document. Also, Gensim includes several kinds of algorithms such as LDA, RP, LSA, TF-IDF, hierarchical Dirichlet processes (HDPs), LSI, and singular value decomposition (SVD). Hence, all the mentioned algorithms are unsupervised, so there is no need for human input or training corpus.

Each dimension consists of two poles corresponding to a pair of adjectives with opposite semantics (i.e., antonym pairs). The position interval between the poles of each dimension is divided into seven equally-sized parts. Then, given the object, respondents are asked to choose one of the seven parts in each dimension. The closer the position is to a pole, the closer the respondent believes the object is semantically related to the corresponding adjective. More than 8 million event records and 1.2 million news articles are collected to conduct this study. The findings indicate that media bias is highly regional and sensitive to popular events at the time, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The precisions for the negative class are around 47~49%, but the recalls are way higher at 64~67%. So from our set of data we got a lot of texts classified as negative, many of them were in the set of actual negative, however, a lot of them were also non-negative. The last entry added by RandomOverSampler is exactly same as the fourth one (index number 3) from the top. RandomOverSampler simply repeats some entries of the minority class to balance the data. If we look at the target sentiments after RandomOverSampler, we can see that it has now a perfect balance between classes by adding on more entry of negative class.

Markov chains start with an initial state and then randomly generate subsequent states based on the prior one. The model learns about the current state and the previous state and then calculates the probability of moving to the next state based on the previous two. In a machine learning context, the algorithm creates phrases and sentences by choosing words that are statistically likely to appear together. Mixture of experts (MoE) is a machine learning approach that divides an artificial intelligence (AI) model into separate sub-networks (or “experts”), each specializing in a subset of the input data, to jointly perform a task. NLP leverages methods taken from linguistics, artificial intelligence (AI), and computer and data science to help computers understand verbal and written forms of human language.

The encoder vocabulary includes the eight words, six abstract outputs (coloured circles), and two special symbols for separating the study examples (∣ and →). Despite their promise, the new generative AI tools open a can of worms regarding accuracy, trustworthiness, bias, hallucination and plagiarism — ethical issues that likely will take years to sort out. Microsoft’s first foray into chatbots in 2016, called Tay, for example, had to be turned off after it started spewing inflammatory rhetoric on Twitter. Key to the concept (and efficiency) of MoEs is that only some of the experts (and therefore parameters) in a sparse layer will be activated at any given time, thereby reducing active computational requirements. It’s worth noting, however, that a sparse MoE’s overall parameter count is not totally irrelevant to computational requirements. NLP technologies of all types are further limited in healthcare applications when they fail to perform at an acceptable level. Like NLU, NLG has seen more limited use in healthcare than NLP technologies, but researchers indicate that the technology has significant promise to help tackle the problem of healthcare’s diverse information needs.

For instance, this PWC article predicts that AI could potentially contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2035. China and the United States are primed to benefit the most from the coming AI boom, accounting for nearly 70% of the global impact. I will be covering some basics on how to scrape and retrieve these news articles from their website in the next section.

Because of this bidirectional context, the model can capture dependencies and interactions between words in a phrase. From a technical perspective, the various language model types differ in the amount of text data they analyze and the math they use to analyze it. LLMs excel at capturing context and generating contextually appropriate responses. They use the information provided in the input sequence to generate text that considers the preceding context. The self-attention mechanisms in the transformer architecture play a crucial role in the LLM’s ability to capture long-range dependencies and contextual information. Multilingual models are trained on text from multiple languages and can process and generate text in several languages. They can be useful for tasks such as cross-lingual information retrieval, machine translation, or multilingual chatbots. By leveraging shared representations across languages, multilingual models can transfer knowledge from one language to another.

Artificial general intelligence is one of the types of AI that will contribute to the eventual development of artificial superintelligence. Some work has been carried out to detect mental illness by interviewing users and then analyzing the linguistic information extracted from transcribed clinical interviews33,34. The main datasets include the DAIC-WoZ depression database35 that involves transcriptions of 142 participants, the AViD-Corpus36 with 48 participants, and the schizophrenic identification corpus37 collected from 109 participants. A total of 10,467 bibliographic records were retrieved from six databases, of which 7536 records were retained after removing duplication. Then, we used RobotAnalyst17, a tool that minimizes the human workload involved in the screening phase of reviews, by prioritizing the most relevant articles for mental illness based on relevancy feedback and active learning18,19.

Until a few years ago, researchers altered proteins by cloning them into bacteria or yeast, and coaxing the microorganisms to mutate until they produced the desired product. Scientists could also design a protein manually by deliberately altering its amino-acid sequence, but that’s a laborious process that could cause it to fold incorrectly or prevent the cell from producing it at all. Participatory design (co-design) has been proposed as a solution to design more inclusive and suitable companion robots for older adults, and to promote mutual learning between participants and researchers (Lee et al., 2017; Kuoppamäki et al., 2023). This approach takes participants’ self-perceived thoughts and opinions into consideration and highlights factors that influence their attitudes towards robots in developing robot concepts, applications, and interaction modalities. Companion robots are socially assistive robots that are designed to respond to the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of older adults and enhance their quality of life, activity, and participation.

Using AI in EDA is reinvigorating the whole tools industry, prompting established players to upgrade their tool offerings with AI/ML features, while drawing in startups trying to carve out differentiated approaches to fill unaddressed gaps with new tools and methodologies.

In comparison to ‘(reinforcement) learning from human feedback’ approaches, lifelong learning does not require explicit feedback in the dialogue and can be used to learn new facts from conversations, as well as update previously learned facts (Casper et al., 2023). While lifelong learning in foundation models showed benefits in various areas, such as question answering and empathetic dialogue generation (e.g., Scialom et al., 2022; Luo et al., 2023), open-domain dialogue is yet to be explored. Active listening can be achieved with LLMs through prompting, such as by describing the agent as an active listener that reflects on situations using shared history and follow-up questions (Irfan et al., 2023). In addition, LLMs can be combined with follow-up question generation mechanisms (S B et al., 2021; Ge et al., 2022).

AFRY’s use of AI-driven design in the Fjällbogatan project highlights how AI in architecture can enhance efficiency, reduce risks, and unlock new opportunities in urban development. AFRY, one of Europe’s largest engineering firms, was tasked with developing a residential complex in Gothenburg, Sweden’s Fjällbogatan neighborhood while addressing environmental risks such as flooding. This approach helped mitigate flood risks and increased the development’s capacity from 100 to 108 apartments without compromising architectural vision or investment potential. Patriarche, a multidisciplinary architecture firm, has transformed its early-stage urban planning by adopting Autodesk Forma.

This is complemented by expanded memory to store and run larger models locally, along with increased network bandwidth to scale up training cluster sizes efficiently.
