At the foundational layer, an LLM needs to be trained on a large volume — sometimes referred to as a corpus — of data that is typically petabytes in size. In comparison to ‘(reinforcement) learning from human feedback’ approaches, lifelong learning does not require explicit feedback in the dialogue and can be used to learn new facts from conversations, as well as update previously learned facts (Casper et al., 2023). While lifelong learning in foundation models showed benefits in various areas, such as question answering and empathetic dialogue generation (e.g., Scialom et al., 2022; Luo et al., 2023), open-domain dialogue is yet to be explored. Active listening can be achieved with LLMs through prompting, such as by describing the agent as an active listener that reflects on situations using shared history and follow-up questions (Irfan et al., 2023). In addition, LLMs can be combined with follow-up question generation mechanisms (S B et al., 2021; Ge et al., 2022).

Grok has direct, real-time access to posts on X, whereas ChatGPT’s free version only knows information up to January of 2022, and its paid version only knows information up to April of 2023. This means Grok can engage in conversations about more recent events, such as the Israel-Hamas war or the 2024 Super Bowl. In fact, depending on the question asked, Grok will actually display real posts on X that it is referencing in order to show where its point of view is coming from.

Some people following AI developments have a less favorable view of Meta’s open source AI strategy. Building products based on open-sourced machine-learning models distinguishes Meta from competitors who are also racing to introduce new forms of AI. The company’s other new AI launches include two generative AI tools for photo editing that will be made available to Instagram users next month. One called Backdrop can swap the background for one generated by a text prompt; the other, Restyle, uses generative AI to do things like surround a person with puppies. Its adherents are less interested in the harms that are already here than in the ones that may someday arise – in particular the “existential risk” of an AI that becomes “superintelligent” and wipes out the human race. Here the reigning metaphor is not a parrot but Skynet, the genocidal computer system from the Terminator films.
